John Mercanti is the 12th US Mint Chief Engraver. He is the most famous US coin engraver of the modern era and has designed more than 100 US coins and medals. He retired from the US Mint in 2010 and his original symbolic reverse design on the Silver Eagle will be replaced later this year.
